Five-time GRAMMY Award winner Keb’ Mo’ has released “Hand It Over” featuring the acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir, offering fans another heartfelt preview of his upcoming album, The Breakdown, arriving August 21 via Concord Records.
Originally featured on Keb’ Mo’s GRAMMY-winning 1996 album Just Like You, the song has been reimagined with new life and recorded at Flame Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa. The historic recording studio is housed inside a former prison where Nelson Mandela was once held during the Rivonia Trial, adding another layer of significance to the collaboration.

“I’m excited to share my collaboration with the Soweto Gospel Choir,” Keb’ Mo’ said. “Once again, I’m makin’ my mama proud by performing her favorite song of mine. And thank you to the SGC for going on this journey with me!”
The release carries even deeper meaning considering it was recorded just months before the blues legend faced one of the biggest challenges of his life. While on tour in 2024, Keb’ Mo’ began experiencing severe shortness of breath and was hospitalized, ultimately undergoing life-saving open-heart surgery.
That experience, combined with the end of his nearly 20-year marriage, became the emotional foundation for The Breakdown. Recorded in his home studio outside Nashville, the 10-track album explores healing, resilience, gratitude, and embracing life’s inevitable changes.
“I had to go through some difficult experiences to get these songs,” Keb’ Mo’ shared. “But I learned a lot looking back on my life and my relationships and taking inventory of everything in a new light.”
Now approaching his 75th birthday, the singer-songwriter says the album reflects a renewed appreciation for life.
“I’m turning 75 this year, and I know I won’t be around forever. All you can do is make the most of what you’ve got and be grateful for every step of the journey.”
“Hand It Over” follows the recent release of “Fussing and Fighting,” the album’s first single, which was accompanied by a live performance video.
